Assistive technology for dyslexia

The tools that give a student access to material they cannot yet read independently, and the honest limits of what technology can do.

What assistive technology is for

Assistive technology does not treat dyslexia. It removes the reading bottleneck so a student can keep learning everything else while the reading is being rebuilt.

That distinction is worth being firm about, because both halves get argued badly. Technology is not cheating, and it is not a cure. A student who can reason about the causes of a war but cannot yet read the chapter should not be excluded from history for a reason that has nothing to do with history. Equally, a student given only audiobooks and never taught to decode has been handed a workaround instead of an education.

The correct model is both, at the same time: intervention that rebuilds reading, plus technology that keeps content accessible while that work is underway.

The tools that matter

Getting information in

Text to speech and audiobooks

  • Built in screen readers on phones, tablets and computers, which are free and already installed.
  • Immersive or focus reading modes that highlight each word as it is spoken, which supports decoding rather than bypassing it.
  • Audiobook services for students with print disabilities, including Learning Ally and Bookshare, which require documentation of eligibility.
  • Optical character recognition apps that photograph a printed worksheet and read it aloud.
Getting information out

Speech to text and writing support

  • Dictation, built into every major operating system, which separates having ideas from spelling them.
  • Word prediction, which reduces the spelling load while still requiring the student to choose.
  • Spelling support designed for phonetic misspellings, since standard spellcheck often fails on the errors dyslexic writers actually make.
  • Graphic organizers and outlining tools for structuring a piece before writing it.
Reducing the load

Access and presentation

  • Adjustable font size, spacing and line length, which genuinely affect reading effort.
  • Recorded lectures or teacher notes, so listening and writing do not compete.
  • Digital versions of texts, which unlock every other tool on this page.

What to introduce when

The transition that matters most is the one where the student stops being given tools and starts requesting them. Practice that conversation before it has to happen with a professor or an employer.

Getting it into school

  • Ask for an assistive technology evaluation. Put the request in writing. It can be part of an existing plan.
  • Get specific tools named in the plan. Access to technology as needed is not enforceable. A named tool with a named context is.
  • Confirm who provides the device and licenses. This should not be left as an assumption.
  • Ask for training, for staff as well as the student. Tools that nobody was shown how to use quietly stop being used.
  • Get consistency across classrooms. Tools allowed in one class and not another put the student in the middle of an adult disagreement.
  • Build the record early for testing accommodations. College entrance testing generally expects a documented history of use.

What technology cannot replace

No tool on this page teaches a student to read. Text to speech will get a fourteen year old through a textbook, and it will not build the decoding skill they still need for a job application, a lease or a medication label.

Assistive technology also has real costs worth planning for. Tools need setup, updates and troubleshooting. Some students resist anything that marks them as different, which is a legitimate concern and usually eases when the whole class has access to the same features. And a plan built only on technology can be used to justify skipping intervention, which is the worst possible outcome.
